Katherine Cameron RSW RE, 1874-1965
The sister of the artist David Young Cameron, Katherine trained, like her brother, at Glasgow School of Art and Atelier Colarossi in Paris. At Glasgow School of Art in the 1890s, she was part of the social group which include Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret and Francis Macdonald. In 1928, she married art collector and connoisseur Arthur Kay. Her early work was in book illustration but her first love was painting flowers and landscapes in watercolour. The delicate paintings of her mature style earned her considerable acclaim and she was regarded as one of the finest flower painters of her generation She showed work regularly in the UK and also exhibited in the USA. Cameron is also considered to be one of the group of women artists, trained in the 1880s and 1890s at Glasgow School of Art, known as the Glasgow Girls.
